As many of you are probably aware, in addition to losing René Auberjonois yesterday we also lost one Mr. Caroll Spinney. Mr. Spinney worked on Sesame Street as both Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird himself for almost 50 years before retiring last year. To say his work had an impact on my life growing up would be an understatement. Big Bird and Oscar both taught me so many things as a kid and through Spinney’s performance they taught dignity, compassion, acceptance, and a host of other qualities we could all have more of.
I’ve never been good with words and anything I say really can’t do him justice. All I can say is that the world is a little darker without his presence. I don’t know if I believe in an afterlife but if there is one, maybe Spinney is doing alright somewhere.
